Indoor fireworks rental

Indoor fireworks are specially developed theatrical pyro that can be used inside, with fountains, gerbs and comets that give a moment real weight without the scale of outdoor fireworks. The difference with ordinary effects is that real pyrotechnics are involved here, which calls for craftsmanship and strict safety. HuurAV takes care of the advice, the setup, the test, the safety with safety distances and the operation by an experienced technician, and coordinates everything with the venue in advance. That way every effect lands at exactly the right moment and the use stays fully controlled.

What indoor fireworks are and what you use them for

Indoor fireworks are theatrical pyrotechnics developed specifically for use inside. Where outdoor fireworks go up into the air and reach dozens of metres, indoor fireworks stay compact and controlled: fountains that throw up a sparkling column, gerbs that give a directed jet of sparks and comets that draw a short flash of light with a tail. The effect genuinely burns, which gives you a warmth, a scent and a fullness that no electronic effect can imitate. That makes indoor fireworks the heaviest tool in the box for a moment that really matters.

You use indoor fireworks when a single moment is allowed to claim all the attention. Think of the entrance of a keynote speaker, the reveal of a product, the closing chord of a show or the moment a winner is announced. The fountains can stand behind a stage or along a catwalk and, together with the light and the sound, deliver an impact that everyone in the room feels. Because the effect is short and powerful, it works best as an accent on a peak in the programme and not as continuous atmosphere. Indoor fireworks belong to the heavier special effects and are rarely used on their own, but rather in combination with the rest of the technology.

When indoor fireworks suit your event

Indoor fireworks come into their own most strongly at events where a big, shared highlight belongs. At a product launch a series of fountains marks the moment of the reveal, so the audience experiences the new name or product with a visual explosion. At a gala or award evening, comets and gerbs give the announcement of a winner the allure such a moment deserves, certainly on a large stage where a subtler effect would fall flat.

At a large corporate event or a festive opening too, indoor fireworks can lift the opening or closing moment to a higher level. It is important, though, that the venue allows it: there must be enough free height up to the ceiling, the escape routes must stay clear and the fire safety must be able to handle the effect. We assess this in advance and are honest if a location is not suited to it; in that case we advise an alternative such as cold sparks, which gives a comparable image with fewer requirements.

The technology: setup, safety and operation

Indoor fireworks are not an effect you switch on and off with a flick; they call for preparation, certification and a tight protocol. Precisely because real pyro is involved, the way of working is at least as important as the effect itself.

Preparation and permit

Before anything is set up, we look at the venue and the regulations. Professional indoor fireworks may only be ignited by a certified pyrotechnics company, and depending on the municipality and the venue a firing notification or a permit is required. HuurAV arranges this coordination with the venue and the relevant authorities, assesses the free height and the escape routes and coordinates the fire safety with the building manager. Only once everything is in place do we schedule the use. If the approval does not come through, the effect does not go ahead; we are clear about that.

Setup and test

On the day itself we place the pyro units in the positions determined in advance and connect them to a firing system that drives each effect separately and securely. We route the cabling safely, check the clear zones around and above each unit and test the control system without a charge, so we know for certain that the right button activates the right effect at the right moment. We do this test well before there are any guests in the room, so there is time to adjust positions or timing.

Safety and operation

During the programme an experienced technician operates the indoor fireworks, and no one else. They guard the safety distances, keep sight of the zone around the effects and only ignite once it is safe. HuurAV coordinates the safety distances, the free height and the exact timing with the venue and the rest of the technology in advance. That way every fountain lands exactly in sync with the light and the sound, while safety is never lost from view for a moment.

Points of attention for indoor fireworks

The biggest point of attention is the space itself. Indoor fireworks call for free height up to the ceiling, because a fountain standing too close beneath a low ceiling can scorch or leave smoke against the surface. The escape routes and the layout of tables and chairs must also allow the safety distances. We look at the floor plan in advance and, together with you, determine where the effects can stand without getting in the way of the evening’s layout.

A second point is the smoke and the detection. Indoor fireworks give off less smoke than a smoke machine, but enough to make optical smoke detectors respond. We therefore coordinate with the manager about temporarily bypassing part of the detection, always in consultation and with a fire warden where that is needed. Finally, indoor fireworks call for planning: the permits and the coordination with the venue take time, so the earlier you request it, the more smoothly it goes. Anyone who wants indoor fireworks at the last minute runs the risk that the approval no longer comes through in time.

Combining with light, sound and other effects

Indoor fireworks never stand alone; they gain their power from the coherence with the rest of the show. At the moment the fountains fire, the light ideally dips to a deeper level for a moment so the sparks contrast to the maximum, and then shoots on into a bright lighting state. That choreography between light and pyro makes the difference between a nice effect and a moment the whole room feels.

The sound plays a part too: a fountain that lands exactly in sync with a musical hit or a countdown lands harder than an effect that comes too early or too late. Because HuurAV delivers sound, light, video and effects from a single source, we link the indoor fireworks seamlessly to the rest of the control, and we often combine them with lighter effects that build towards the moment. HuurAV takes care of the advice, the setup, the test and the operation. Standalone rental of simple effects without support can be arranged through SpeakerVerhuur.nl, but because of the pyro we always deliver indoor fireworks with a technician.

Frequently asked questions

Renting indoor fireworks rental

What is the difference between indoor fireworks and cold sparks?

Indoor fireworks are real theatrical pyro that burns and gives off heat, a light smoke and a brighter shower of sparks. Cold sparks work with heated metal powder at a much lower temperature and without open combustion. Indoor fireworks therefore look fuller and more theatrical, but call for more safety distance, coordination with the venue and operation by a certified technician. Which of the two suits you depends on your room and your programme.

Can indoor fireworks simply be used in any venue?

No, strict rules apply here. Professional indoor fireworks may only be ignited by a certified pyrotechnics company, and depending on the municipality and the venue a firing notification or permit is required. We arrange this coordination with the venue and the relevant authorities and assess in advance whether the free height, the escape routes and the fire safety allow the effect. Without that approval the effect does not go ahead.

Do indoor fireworks release a lot of smoke?

A limited amount of smoke is released, less than from a smoke machine but enough to take into account. Optical smoke detectors can respond to it, so we coordinate with the building manager in advance about temporarily bypassing part of the detection. We also look at the ventilation, so the room clears quickly after the effect and the next part of the programme is not left standing in the smoke.

How close may guests stand to the indoor fireworks?

We always keep a generous clear zone around and above every effect, determined by the type of pyro and the height of the fountain. Our technician guards that zone and only ignites the effect once no one is within the distance. We coordinate the safety distances, the free height up to the ceiling and the operation with the venue in advance, so guests stand close enough for the experience but always outside the risk.
