What a projection screen does for your programme

A projection screen literally puts your message on a grand scale. Where a laptop screen or a small display only reaches the front rows, projection makes your presentation, film or live footage visible to the whole room. The screen works together with a projector that casts the image onto it, and it is precisely that combination that determines the quality. A large screen with too weak a projector produces a washed-out image, while a strong projector on too small a screen does not make the most of its power.

When you need a projection screen

As soon as you want to show something to a group, a projection screen comes into play. For a presentation or conference you want your slides to be legible everywhere, right to the back row. For a film screening or open-air cinema you want a large, immersive image. And for an award ceremony, product launch or anniversary, image reinforces the story and holds the attention.

At moments where the image is supporting too, a good screen counts. Think of a wedding where a photo montage is shown, a member meeting where figures are shared, or a training session where participants have to read along. In all these cases, legibility decides whether your audience follows along effortlessly or switches off.

In larger halls, image plays a second role: it brings the speaker closer. Those seated at the back see only a small figure on the stage, but on the screen that same speaker appears up close. The right screen size for your room

A projection screen only works when the image is legible all the way to the back of the room. That is where size is decisive: too small and the back row misses the detail, too large and the image no longer fits neatly into the space. We determine the size based on the viewing distance and the room, so that the image is easy to follow everywhere.

A handy rule of thumb is that the image height should be roughly one sixth of the distance to the furthest viewer. If your back row is at eighteen metres, you want an image height of around three metres, so text stays comfortably readable. If the room runs deeper, the screen scales up with it, and in an intimate space a more compact size is enough.

The sightlines count too: if there is an audience blocking each other’s view, we hang the screen higher or choose a layout that gives everyone a clear line of sight. In a hall with pillars or a low ceiling, that calls for creative thinking, because a beautiful screen is worth little if half the room cannot see it. A projector matched to the light

The projector’s light output matters just as much as the screen. In a darkened room, projection looks superb, but in daylight you need more brightness. A projector’s brightness is expressed in lumens, and the more ambient light there is, the more lumens you need to keep a bright, high-contrast image. A presentation in a darkened theatre calls for something very different than a reception in a bright conservatory with lots of glass. The time of day counts too: a gathering that starts at three in the afternoon and runs into the evening changes in terms of light, and we take that into account in our choice.

The projection distance and the type of lens play a part as well: sometimes the projector sits far back, sometimes there is little room and we use a short-throw solution that casts a large image close to the screen. We also look at the contrast and resolution, because a sharp, high-contrast projection reads more comfortably than a bright but flat image. We choose the right projector for the screen and the room, so the image stays clear even in the trickiest spot in the hall. The aspect ratio is often forgotten too. A presentation in the wrong format gets stretched or cropped, which looks unprofessional.
