What a subwoofer does and when to use one

A subwoofer is a speaker that reproduces only the lowest frequencies, the part of the sound you feel as much as you hear. Regular speakers handle speech and music across the full range perfectly well, but the deep foundation under a kick drum, a bass line or a dance track calls for a dedicated cabinet built for the job. That cabinet takes care of the bottom end of the spectrum, so the other speakers can focus on the mid and high frequencies. The result is a sound that feels full and complete instead of thin and flat.

You bring in a subwoofer when you want the music to really fill the room. At a party, the sub is the difference between background music and a dance floor that comes alive. With dance music the bass is not an extra but the heart of the genre: without a good sub the music lacks the drive that gets people moving. A subwoofer only sounds good when it is placed and tuned in the right way. Bass behaves differently from the rest of the sound and therefore needs its own approach, from where it sits on the floor to how it is matched to the other speakers.

Placement

Subwoofers almost always sit on the ground, because the floor reinforces the bass and helps it carry through the room. Exactly where you place them determines how evenly the bass is spread across the dance floor. A sub too close to a corner or against a wall can build up the bass unnaturally, making it thump in one spot and disappear in another. With two or more subs you can spread the bass nicely across the room, or aim it at the dance floor so the energy sits where it belongs. We choose the placement based on the shape of the room and where the audience is.

Tuning

The heart of a good sub setup is how it is tuned to the rest of the system. We set the crossover point, the frequency at which the subwoofer takes over from the regular speakers, so the two blend seamlessly without a gap or overlap. We then set the level of the sub in relation to the speakers, so the bass is full but does not overpower the mid and high frequencies. We also check the phase, because if the sub and the speakers are out of step they weaken each other instead of reinforcing each other. This tuning is precise work and makes the difference between a dull thud and a tight, warm foundation.

Set-up and testing

On the day itself we build well before the start. We put the subs in place, route the cabling safely and check the power supply, because a subwoofer demands plenty of it. Then we test the complete chain: we play material that covers the whole low range and walk through the room to hear whether the bass is right everywhere. We fine-tune until the sound on the dance floor is tight and there are no spots where the bass drops out or takes over. That way everything runs at the right level before the first guest arrives.

Operation on site

During a party the situation changes constantly: a full dance floor sounds different from an empty hall, and the level that feels right early in the evening can often be pushed harder later on. For programmes where the bass really counts, we recommend a sound technician who keeps an eye on the balance and adjusts the bass as the evening goes on. Points to watch specifically with subwoofers

With bass, things often go wrong on points you can head off in advance. The biggest one is the surroundings: bass travels far and passes effortlessly through walls and floors. In a building with neighbours, offices or hotel rooms above or beside the hall, a subwoofer that sounds fine inside can cause serious disturbance outside the room. We take this into account in the placement and the level, and where noise limits apply we tune the bass so you stay within the rules.

A second point is the power supply. Subwoofers demand power, and several subs together can easily overload a circuit that was not planned for it. We map that out in advance so there are no power failures during the party. On top of that, watch out for room resonances: some halls reinforce certain low frequencies so strongly that the bass starts to boom. With careful placement and tuning we work that out. Finally, more is not always better: too much bass makes the sound tiring and dull. The art is a foundation you feel without it flattening the music.

Bass and experience reinforce each other. A solid beat on the dance floor only truly comes alive when the lighting moves with the music: when the light pulses to the beat of the kick drum, you feel and see the bass at the same time, and that makes a party more energetic. Practical tips

Tell us in advance what kind of party you have in mind and what music will be playing.
