Common mistakes (and how to avoid them)

The most common mistake is choosing a set based on power rather than coverage. A large loudspeaker at the front of the room makes it too loud up front and still unclear at the back. The answer is spread: several smaller sources or a line-array that distributes the sound evenly. A second pitfall is forgetting to specify the microphone, which leaves speakers still hard to hear, however good the loudspeakers are.

Organisers also often underestimate the role of the room. A reverberant hall with lots of glass and concrete can seriously disrupt intelligibility, whereas with the right tuning and layout this can largely be managed. Another classic is the power supply: too little or unstable power leads to failures at the worst possible moment. And at outdoor events the wind is often forgotten, which can literally blow sound away if it is not accounted for.
