What is a sound system?

A sound system is the complete setup that makes sure speech and music reach your audience clearly and at the right level throughout a space. It involves much more than just loudspeakers. A good system consists of loudspeakers and amplification, a mixing console where all the sources come together, the cabling and power supply, and the microphones or playback sources that feed in the sound. All those parts have to be matched to one another and to the space, otherwise you end up with reverberation, dropouts at the back of the hall, or a volume that is too loud in one spot and too quiet in another.

What do you use a sound system for?

The use of a sound system ranges from pure intelligibility to full music reproduction. At a presentation or conference it is mainly about speech: every speaker has to be clear all the way to the back of the hall, whether they have a strong or a soft voice. At a party or company celebration the emphasis shifts to music that fills the whole space and carries the atmosphere, with enough low end without making conversation impossible.

In between there is a broad spectrum. At a corporate event you often alternate between speeches, presentations, videos and music, and the system has to handle all those sources smoothly. At a wedding something else matters again: the ceremony and the speeches call for intelligibility and warmth, while later in the evening the party needs a system that drives the dance floor. The question is always the same: which sources come together, how large is the space and what do you want the audience to experience.

From small to large

Small systems are ideal for receptions, drinks, meetings and intimate gatherings. Often a set on stands with a single microphone and a compact mixing console is all you need. Larger spaces and audiences call for more: extra loudspeakers, subwoofers for the low end, and sometimes setups that spread the sound across the full depth of a hall. The technology: setup, tuning and operation

A system that works on paper still has to prove itself in practice. That starts with the placement. We position the loudspeakers so that the sound is spread evenly over the audience and the coverage matches the shape of the space. A long, narrow hall calls for different placement than a wide or a high space. Where needed we add extra loudspeakers further into the hall, so the sound stays clear at the back without becoming too loud at the front.

Then comes the tuning. We adjust the system to the acoustics of the space, because an empty concrete hall sounds completely different from a room with curtains, carpet and an audience. Reverberation, resonances and harsh frequencies are ironed out so that speech sounds natural and music sounds pleasant. The mixing console is the heart of the system: this is where all the microphones, music sources and any audio from video come together and are brought into balance.

Setup and testing

On the day itself we set up well before the start. We lay the cabling neatly and safely, connect all the sources and check the power supply. Then we test the complete chain: every microphone, every playback source and how they work together. We walk through the hall to hear whether the sound is right everywhere and make adjustments where needed. That way everything is up and running before the first guest arrives, and surprises during the programme are ruled out.

On-site operation

For programmes with several speakers, switches between speech and music or a tight running order, we recommend a sound engineer who keeps an eye on the balance during the event. They watch the level, mix the sources and step in immediately when something changes, for example when a speaker talks more softly or the hall fills up. Points to watch specific to sound systems

With sound, things often go wrong at points that can be prevented in advance. Feedback, that annoying whistle when a microphone picks up its own sound, is caused by incorrect placement or adjustment and can be avoided with the right setup and tuning. Intelligibility is a second point to watch: a system set up for music is not automatically suitable for speech. That is why we tune the system to what actually happens during your programme.

The power supply is also more important than people think. A larger system needs enough stable power, especially at locations or outdoors where that is not a given. Noise regulations play a part too: at some venues, and certainly in the open air, there are limits on volume. We take that into account in the choice and the setup of the system, so that you stay within the rules and the sound still carries. Finally, wireless microphones work on frequencies that can be disrupted in a busy environment; we select and check these in advance so there are no dropouts during the event.

Combining with lighting, video and special effects

A sound system rarely stands on its own. At a presentation or party, sound works together with visuals and atmosphere. Good coordination with lighting makes sure a speaker is lit and intelligible and that the mood on the dance floor matches what you hear. When a film, presentation or livestream is shown, the audio from that video has to run seamlessly through the same system, so there is no difference in volume or delay between what you see and what you hear.

For the big moments you can link sound to special effects. Think of an entrance, a countdown or a reveal where music, lighting and effect line up precisely. Practical tips

Think carefully about your programme in advance and share it with us. How many speakers are there, do they switch quickly, will there be music, and will visuals with audio be shown? The clearer that picture, the better we can put the system together. Do not underestimate the space: a hall that looks quiet during the day sounds very different with a full audience, and an outdoor location always calls for more than you expect. Also allow enough time for setup and testing, because a system that can be tuned calmly sounds better than one thrown together under time pressure.
