What sparkulars are and the moment they create

A sparkular is a cold spark fountain: a compact device that heats a fine metal powder into a stream of glittering sparks shooting straight up in a crisp, silver fountain. The look resembles that of classic table fireworks or a shower of sparklers, only bigger, higher and far easier to control. The key is in the word cold: the sparks cool down so quickly after leaving the fountain that they give off barely any heat on contact. That lets you use this effect where real fireworks would never be allowed, namely indoors and close to people.

That makes sparkulars one of the most cinematic effects you can put on in a venue. A fountain firing the moment someone steps onto the dance floor lifts that moment into something guests remember and something that shows up in every photo and video. The sparks catch the light, glitter against a dark background and create a sense of celebration and announcement without the bang, the smoke and the heat of pyrotechnics. We place the fountains stable and level, with the outlet pointing straight up, and set the position of each fountain so the sparks fall where the picture calls for them. For a first dance a fountain often stands on either side of the couple or in a row behind the dance floor; for an entrance two fountains mark a path. The layout always ties in with the height of the space, because the set spark height must stay well below the ceiling.

Height and duration are the two most important settings on a sparkular, and they can be adjusted independently. The height typically ranges from around half a metre to several metres, depending on the device and the space. The duration determines whether you get a short, sharp burst of a few seconds or a longer fountain that runs through an entire moment. For a first dance you might choose a longer, calmer fountain; for an entrance a short, powerful blast.

Control via DMX

We run the control via DMX. That means the spark fountains sit on the same desk as the lighting rig and that we can tie the firing to an exact cue. That way the fountains start precisely on the first note of the opening dance or the moment a name is called. With multiple fountains we can fire them simultaneously for a symmetrical look, or trigger them one after another so a wave of sparks travels across the dance floor.

Set-up, testing and safe operation on location

Before the guests are in, we place and level the fountains, load them with the right amount of powder and set the height and duration. Unlike confetti, we can carefully test a spark fountain on a low setting to check the operation and the control, so we know for certain that each fountain does what it should. After that the fountains are primed for the moment.

Special effects are always placed and operated safely by us. A technician fires the effect live on the cue from the desk and keeps an eye on the zone around the fountains while they run. Because a spark fountain is a targeted moment, the operation on location determines whether the effect lands right on time and whether the surroundings stay safe.

Safety and points of attention

Although sparkulars are cold and use no open flame, they remain effects you set up with care. There are a few points of attention that are specific to a spark fountain.

Clear height and what hangs above. The sparks shoot straight up, so there must be enough clear height above each fountain and nothing flammable directly above the outlet: no drapes, no low structures, no decoration. We match the height setting to the ceiling so the sparks stay well below it.

Safe distance around the fountain. Around each fountain we maintain a clear zone that no guests enter during the effect. Even though the spark shower is cold, we keep the immediate area of the outlet clear so no one stands right up against it. For a first dance this means we choose the positions so the couple dances well outside that zone.

Floor and surface. We place the fountains on a stable, level surface so they cannot tip over or shift, and we take the floor finish directly below the outlet into account. We clear up the cooled powder that comes down afterwards, which we factor into the plan for the handover.

Smoke detectors and fire alarm system. A cold spark fountain produces little to no smoke, so the risk of a false alarm is smaller than with a smoke machine. Even so, we check with the venue beforehand whether the fire alarm system can be temporarily set to an adjusted mode during the effect, and we take the position of detectors above the fountains into account. Disabling detectors is always arranged through the venue, never by us.

Ventilation. Even though the smoke is minimal, in a small or poorly ventilated space we take air quality into account and adjust the duration and the number of fountains accordingly.

Combining with light, sound and other effects

Sparkulars only truly come to life alongside the rest of the show. In a well-lit space the sparks glitter against a dark background, so with lighting you get the most out of the effect: dim the room the moment the fountains fire and let a crisp wash or backlight frame the picture. The timing of sparks and light on the same cue determines whether the moment lands, which is why we keep both on the same desk.

With sound you amplify the announcement: a fountain firing exactly on the first note of the opening dance or on a swelling finale feels far bigger than any element on its own. For a reveal, sparkulars pair beautifully with video, with the sparks firing the moment the name or image appears. And within special effects you deliberately combine a spark fountain with a light haze as a base layer, so the light beams around the sparks are already crisply visible and the picture becomes fuller still.
