Uplights rental
Uplights put a room in a new light by washing walls, pillars and columns from below in exactly the colour that suits your event. Because they run wirelessly on battery power, we place them wherever you want them, with no cables across the floor. We take care of the design, the setup, the settings and the collection.

What uplights are and the atmosphere they create
Uplights are compact light fixtures that you place on the floor and that shine upwards from below. Aim them at a wall, a pillar or a column and you get a broad patch of colour that softens as it rises. That effect instantly makes a room feel deeper and warmer. A bare hall that looks businesslike by day is transformed within minutes into a place with atmosphere, without you having to change anything about the room itself.
The strength of uplights lies in the simplicity of the idea and the richness of the result. You are not adding furniture or decor, you are only changing how the existing surface is seen. A plain concrete wall becomes a warm backdrop, a row of columns gains rhythm, and the corners of a hall that would normally fade away become part of the whole. Because the fixtures mix the full colour spectrum, you can set anything from a deep royal blue to a soft peach, and everything in between.
Our uplights work wirelessly on battery power. That is not just a detail: it determines where you can put them. You are not tied to power sockets, there is no need for cables across the floor and there is no risk of guests tripping. We place a fixture just as easily in the middle of a stage or against a freestanding column as along a wall with power points.
When to use uplights
Uplights suit almost any type of event, precisely because they enhance the existing space rather than overpowering it. At a wedding they give the ceremony area and the party room a warm, romantic glow that naturally comes through in the photos. During dinner you keep the colours calm, and once the party starts you can switch to something livelier.
At a corporate event uplights are often used to bring a neutral hall into the brand style. The walls take on the brand colour, so guests feel from the moment they arrive that they are at the right event. That same principle works well for a party or company party, where the colour sets the tone before the music even begins.
Uplights are also useful at presentations and conferences. They give the hall walls and the stage area a polished look and help subtly guide attention to the front. You will also see them a lot at anniversaries, galas, product launches, drinks receptions and other receptions. Anywhere a room could look just a little better than it does on its own, uplights earn their place.
Indoors and outdoors
Indoors, uplights are at their best in a room where you can dim the daylight. The darker the surroundings, the more strongly the colour stands out. In a bright hall or during the day the effect stays more subtle, and in that case we deliberately choose spots and tones that still catch the eye. For outdoor use or damp conditions we bring fixtures that are suited to that; we agree on this in advance based on your location.
The technology behind uplights
Layout and placement
Placement determines the end result. We first look at the room: which walls lend themselves to an even patch of colour, which columns we want to accentuate and where the fixtures are better left out of sight. For an even look we space the uplights at regular distances along a wall, so the patches of colour overlap nicely and no dark gaps appear between them. For pillars and columns we often use one fixture per object, aimed at the height and the shape.
The angle and the distance to the surface matter too. Place an uplight too close to a low wall and you get a bright spot at the bottom that quickly fades. A little more distance gives a higher, more even glow. We make these kinds of choices on site, because every room responds differently to light.
Control via DMX and wireless operation
Our uplights can be controlled via DMX, the standard protocol for stage and event lighting. In practice we work wirelessly, so we do not need signal cables running between the fixtures. From a central control point we set the colour, the brightness and any transitions per fixture or per group. That way you can, for example, set all the walls to one colour and the columns to an accent colour, or run slow colour changes that are barely noticeable but keep the room alive.
If you want to approach light as a broader whole, with movement, spots and accents alongside the uplights, take a look at our options around lighting. Uplights are often the base layer on which we build the rest.
Setup, testing and operation on site
On the day itself we position the fixtures, distribute them according to the plan and set the colours. That is always followed by a test: we look at the picture in the hall, correct tones that turn out differently than expected and check that all the fixtures light up evenly. Small differences between walls or corners we fine-tune until the whole thing is right.
During your event we can handle the operation ourselves, so the transitions arrive at the right moment, or we set everything and briefly explain how to switch a scene yourself. What works best depends on the size and the flow of your programme. For larger productions there is usually a technician on hand who runs the lighting along with the rest of the evening.
Points to consider specific to uplights
A few things determine whether uplights truly come into their own. The most important is the surface: a light, even wall gives the finest and brightest colour, while a dark or heavily textured wall absorbs more light. With dark walls we take that into account through placement and brightness.
Ambient light counts too. Harsh work lights or a lot of daylight flatten the effect. That is why we like to discuss how the existing light can be dimmed during your event, so the colours really speak. We also keep an eye on battery life: for a long programme we plan the brightness so the fixtures last the whole evening, and we always charge fully before we come to the location.
Finally there is placement relative to guests and walking routes. Because the fixtures stand on the floor, we choose positions where they are not in the way and where no one looks straight into the bright light. Working wirelessly helps with that, because we are not tied to where the socket happens to be.
Combining with other disciplines
Uplights work best as part of a larger whole. Together with sound you make sure the atmosphere of a room and the experience of the music or the speakers line up; a warm colour and a well-balanced sound picture reinforce each other. For presentations and shows the colour scheme of the uplights often ties in with what happens on the screen, so we coordinate them with the video side of the production.
For an extra layer of effect we like to combine uplights with special effects, such as a light layer of haze that makes the colour visible in the air, or accents that break open the room at a high point. That way the static colour layer of the uplights suddenly becomes dynamic. Because at HuurAV we handle lighting, sound, video and effects within a single production, these elements flow smoothly into one another on site, controlled from one plan.
Practical tips
Think in advance about the colour you want and why. One calm colour across the whole room often looks more refined than lots of different tones mixed together. If you do want variation, choose a main colour for the walls and a subtle accent colour for columns or specific spots.
Take the flow of your evening into account. A programme that begins with a reception and ends with a dance floor calls for light that moves with it. Let us know in advance and we will prepare the scenes and the transitions. Also check whether your location can dim the ambient light, because that makes a big difference to how the colours come across. And leave the placement to the setup on site: a layout that works on paper sometimes looks a little different in the room, and those final corrections determine the end result.
If you just want to collect a few uplights and set them up yourself, you can rent them separately through SpeakerVerhuur.nl. If you are looking for a fully finished result where the design, the setup, the testing and the operation are all taken care of, HuurAV handles it from start to finish.

Do uplights really work without cables and a power socket?
Yes. Our uplights have a built-in battery and are controlled wirelessly, so you do not need power points or cables running along the walls. That means we can place them in spots where there is no socket nearby, such as the middle of a stage or against a freestanding column.
How long do the batteries of an uplight last over an evening?
Depending on colour and brightness, a full battery comfortably lasts an evening. We fully charge everything in advance and, for longer programmes, we plan around the runtime so the colours do not drop out halfway through your party.
Can you match the colours to our theme or brand style?
Absolutely. Let us know the colour you want, a theme or your brand style, and we will set the tones accordingly. Because the fixtures mix the full colour spectrum, we can get very close to a specific brand colour.
Can the colour change during the evening?
It can. We can fix the uplights on a single colour or let them shift with the flow of the evening, for example calm and warm during dinner and livelier once the party begins. We control those transitions remotely.
Can I also collect uplights myself without a technician?
For self-service rental without setup you can go to our webshop SpeakerVerhuur.nl. If you would like us to create the design, set everything up, test it and operate it during your event, then HuurAV takes care of that on a quotation basis.
