What dance floor lighting does for a party

Dance floor lighting is the light that brings a dance floor to life. When to use dance floor lighting

You bring in dance floor lighting at any moment where there is dancing, but the approach varies greatly depending on the occasion.

At a wedding the evening usually starts calmly, with a first dance that calls for understated yet atmospheric lighting, after which the light grows steadily more exuberant as the party really gets going. At a party or corporate party the lighting can be more expressive from the outset, with strong movement, colour and effect that give the floor energy right away.

At a corporate event with a festive finale, dance floor lighting also comes into its own: after the main programme the room switches to party mode and the light provides the transition from business to fun. Even at presentations and conferences with drinks or an afterparty, a well-lit dance floor makes the difference between winding down and everyone staying on.

The technology behind dance floor lighting

A lively dance floor looks spontaneous, but a great result calls for a well-considered setup and reliable control. Below we explain how we go about it.

Setup and fixtures

We work mainly with LED fixtures and moving heads, because they give off little heat, are energy efficient and can reproduce any colour. We prefer to place moving heads on a truss or on stands around or above the dance floor, so the beams have free rein and can be aimed at the floor and the guests. In addition we use more compact effect fixtures and wash lighting to bathe the whole floor in colour. The number of fixtures and their placement depend on the dimensions of the dance floor, the available height and the effect you want to achieve. A low room calls for a different approach than a space with plenty of height, and we make that assessment in advance based on the venue.

DMX and control

The fixtures are controlled via DMX, the standard for lighting control. With it we set the colour, intensity, movement and effect per fixture, and combine several fixtures into groups that respond as one. We programme different scenes in advance: a calm scene for the start of the evening, building scenes as the crowd grows and intense scenes for the peak moments. Where desired we have the light move automatically with the audio signal of the music, so the beat becomes visible on the floor.

Setup, testing and operation on site

On the day itself we position and aim all the fixtures, rig the truss where needed, connect the control and test the whole system in the room as it will be set up during the event. Movements and colours that look good on paper sometimes play out differently on a real floor, so we fine-tune on the spot until it is right. For simple setups we can leave scenes behind that respond automatically to the music. For larger productions a technician stays on hand to move the light live with the DJ or band, so the build towards the peak moments is genuinely felt. Afterwards we collect everything again, so you need not lift a finger.

Points to consider with dance floor lighting

A few things determine whether dance floor lighting really works. First, the available height: moving beams look their best with some room above the floor, and in a low space we choose fixtures and effects that also work without much height. Second, the visibility of the beams: without a light haze you mainly see the light on the floor and the guests, but not the beams themselves. If you want that theatrical effect of visible rays, a haze machine belongs in the plan.

Power is another consideration. LED fixtures use relatively little, but a large setup with moving heads calls for careful distribution across the available circuits to prevent overloading. Cabling, safety and placement also deserve attention: fixtures and stands around a busy dance floor must stand firmly and cables must be tidied away, especially where guests are dancing. Finally, we take account of bright effects such as strobe, which we use deliberately and in moderation. We build these things in as standard, so the lighting not only makes an impression but also holds up safely and reliably all evening.

Combining with other disciplines

Dance floor lighting comes into its own as part of a larger whole. In combination with sound you let the light move with the music, so the beat and the build towards the peak moments become both audible and visible. If a presentation or speech runs before the dance floor opens, we tune the light to the picture of the video, so the room stays polished right up to the moment the party begins.
