Matching the right sound to room and audience

Not every room and not every audience calls for the same sound. What works in a small meeting room is completely inadequate on a festival ground, and what fills a concert hall would overwhelm an intimate dinner. The answer to that determines the power, the number of speakers and the setup.

The dimensions of the venue determine how far the sound must carry. In a small space a compact set that spreads the sound evenly without dominating is enough. In a long or wide hall the sound must reach further without being too loud at the front, which often calls for multiple speakers or a line-array. In very large spaces and outdoor locations the directivity of the system also counts, so the sound goes to the audience and is not lost into the surroundings.

The number of guests determines the required power. People absorb sound, so a full room sounds different from an empty one. We calculate for that in advance, so the sound stays convincing even at peak moments with full occupancy. A system that sounds fine during rehearsal in an empty room can fall short when two hundred people are standing, and that is exactly the situation that matters.

The acoustics of the room are the third determining factor. A hall with a lot of glass, concrete and hard floors reverberates and quickly makes speech unintelligible, while a room with curtains, carpet and soft furniture dampens the sound. With speech it is all about intelligibility. The mid range, in which the human voice sits, must come through the room clearly and evenly, without reverb and without feedback. On the day itself we handle the build-up. Our team places or hangs the speakers, tucks away the cabling neatly, sets up the mixing desk and makes sure everything looks refined. We work clean and structured, because cables in the walking routes or stands in view undermine any professional appearance. Everything is tucked away and nothing gets in the way of your guests.

Then comes the soundcheck. This is the moment the sound comes to life. We check every microphone and every source, tune the frequencies to the acoustics of the room, walk through the space to test the intelligibility and the coverage in every spot and take out any feedback. Practical matters we look after

To begin with, we look at power and cabling. A sound system needs reliable supply, and especially with larger systems with many speakers and subwoofers the power supply must be right. We map out in advance which circuits are available and distribute the load, so nothing fails at the moment the room is full. At outdoor locations without a fixed connection we arrange the power supply as well.

In addition, frequency management is a fixed part, especially with wireless microphones. When multiple wireless channels are in use at the same time, the frequencies must be distributed carefully to prevent interference and dropout. We coordinate this in advance and take into account other wireless systems on site, so your programme is not interrupted by noise or failing microphones.

We also take timing and logistics into account. When can we get into the room, how much time is there for build-up and soundcheck, when must everything be ready and how does the tear-down go afterward? We coordinate that planning with the venue and any other suppliers. Because we often provide lighting and video as well, we can align those disciplines and avoid duplicate work.
