What cold sparks are

Cold sparks are a special effect that sends a sparkling shower of light bursting upwards, with the look of elegant fireworks but without an open flame. A fountain heats a fine metal powder until it starts to sparkle, after which a column of golden sparks shoots into the air and arcs back down again. The sparks are cool enough to burn out before they reach the floor, and it is precisely that property that makes the effect suitable for indoor use.

This is exactly where it differs from traditional pyrotechnics. Real fireworks and classic flame projectors work with an open flame, high temperatures and smoke, which is why you can rarely if ever use them safely indoors. Cold sparks turn that around: the temperature of the sparks stays low, there is no burning flame and hardly any smoke is released. That means you can place a fountain in the middle of a room, behind a stage or along a walkway, in spots where real fireworks would be unthinkable.

The atmosphere and the moment it creates

A fountain of cold sparks lifts a moment into something festive without turning it raw or harsh. When to use cold sparks

Cold sparks are an effect for standout moments indoors, where real fireworks are not possible. You use them deliberately at the points where you want to create a festive peak.

• Entrances and arrivals: a row of fountains lighting up the moment a speaker, artist or the newlyweds walk in gives the arrival instant flair. At a wedding an arch of cold sparks during the first dance or the entrance of the couple is a much-loved image, precisely because it can be done safely indoors.
• Reveals and countdown moments: at a product launch a shower of sparks marks the moment the product comes into view or a counter hits zero. The building column of sparks draws the eye and gives the reveal weight.
• Festive peaks at a corporate party: at parties and corporate events you use cold sparks to open the dance floor, to mark an anniversary moment or to announce a highlight in the programme.

The technology: setup and control

A cold spark machine heats a charge of fine metal powder under controlled conditions until it sparkles, and blows the sparks upwards like a fountain. The height and duration of the column are adjustable, so we can tailor the effect to the room and the moment. The craft lies mainly in safe placement, setting the fountain height and controlling everything with precise timing.

Placement and direction

Position determines how the fountain reads. We aim the units upwards and choose the spot so there is generous clearance above the fountain, away from drapes, decor and flammable materials. A symmetrical setup to the left and right of a stage or along a walkway gives a clean, festive picture towards the audience. We also account for sightlines, so the shower of sparks is fully visible to the room and does not disappear behind decor or equipment.

Control via DMX

We control the fountains via DMX, linked to the same desk as the lighting rig. This way a shower of sparks lands exactly on a reveal, an entrance or a countdown, in sync with the lighting looks. From the desk we set the height and duration of the column for each fountain and can fire multiple units at once or in sequence, for example a wave that runs from left to right. Because everything runs from the desk, we weave the effect seamlessly into the programme.

Setup, testing and safe operation on location

We set up well before the programme, place the units stably and secured and set the fountain height to the free space in the room. Before the programme we do a short test fire to check that the column builds properly, that the height is right and that the timing from the desk runs cleanly. During the event our technician operates the fountains, so every firing happens deliberately and under control and the clear zone around the units stays guaranteed. Afterwards we let the units cool down and clear the effect away safely.

Safety and points of attention

We always place and operate special effects safely, and with cold sparks the points of attention are specific to this effect: although the sparks are cold and there is no open flame, it remains an effect you place and manage deliberately.

Clear zone and safe distance

Around and above every fountain we keep a clear zone free of guests, flammable materials and decor. The sparks do burn out quickly, but we place the units so the audience stays a safe distance from the building column. Our technician operates the effect and keeps an eye on the surroundings, so no one is ever too close to a fountain the moment it fires.

Free height and materials above the fountain

The spark column needs room, so the free height up to the ceiling and the structure above it are decisive. We always set the fountain height well below the ceiling and keep drapes, banners, decor and other flammable items out of the zone above the units. In rooms with a low ceiling or a lot of textile above the stage we limit the height or advise a different position.

Smoke detectors and ventilation

Cold sparks produce little smoke, but a light haze can build up with repeated use. Because every fire alarm system is set up differently, we always coordinate the use with the venue and the building management in advance. Where needed we discuss temporarily bypassing detectors, always in consultation and never on our own initiative. We also make sure there is enough air circulation in the space.

Floor and immediate surroundings

A limited amount of burnt-out residue can settle beneath a fountain. We choose the position partly based on the floor underneath and the audience’s room to move, and we keep the immediate area around the units clear. That keeps the firing spot tidy and safe, even with several firings over an evening.

Combining with lighting, sound and other effects

Cold sparks truly come into their own as part of the rest of the production. The golden shower of sparks is an image that thrives on timing and on the surrounding atmosphere.

• With lighting: this is the strongest combination. A spark fountain that builds while warm or coloured lighting kicks in at that same moment reinforces the feeling of a big moment. We programme the fountains and the lighting together, so the column of sparks and the lighting change land at the same point.
• With sound: a fountain that coincides with a musical build or a fanfare through the sound system lifts an entrance or reveal to a higher level. The timing of the shower of sparks runs along with the sound moment.
• With video: a shower of sparks timed to an image or a countdown screen marks the moment even more. With video we account for the position of the fountains relative to the projection, so the sparks and the image reinforce each other rather than get in the way.

Practical tips for a successful result

• Use cold sparks for the moment, not continuously. The power lies in the rarity. A few well-timed fountains at an entrance or reveal make a bigger impression than units that keep sparkling all evening.
• Work with a dark backdrop. The golden sparks read sharpest against a dimmed or dark room. In a brightly lit space the shower of sparks loses its shine.
• Check the clearance in advance. The column needs room and the materials above the fountain determine what is possible. We set the height to the room and keep the zone above it clear.
• Coordinate the fire alarm system in good time. Arrange the discussion with the venue well ahead, so the use runs without surprises on the day itself.
• Programme together with lighting and music. Let the fountains run within the show, so the shower of sparks, the lighting change and the sound moment all land at the same point.
