What a haze machine does

A haze machine spreads an extremely fine mist of tiny particles that stay suspended in the air for a long time. Those particles catch the light, so you suddenly see where a ray of light travels. Without haze, a fixture or a laser simply shines from point A to point B and you only see the starting point and where the beam lands. With haze, the entire path of the ray becomes visible: the beam takes shape, the laser draws sharp lines through the room and coloured light gains depth.

What makes haze special is its subtlety. The mist is so fine and so evenly distributed that guests barely perceive it as smoke. There is no cloud in front of your face and the view of the stage or the dance floor stays clear. What you do notice is that the room suddenly gains atmosphere and dimension. That is precisely where it differs from a smoke machine: smoke produces dense, clearly visible plumes for a dramatic moment, while haze lays down a constant, unobtrusive base on which your entire lighting design comes to life.

The atmosphere it creates

Haze makes light tangible. A single sharp beam cutting through a dark room only has impact when you see it in its entirety. Moving beams above a dance floor, a crisp laser during a countdown or warm backlight behind a speaker: it all truly comes into its own only when there is a thin mist hanging in the air. Haze does not put itself in the spotlight, but lifts everything around it to a higher level.

When to use a haze machine

Haze is not an effect for a single highlight, but a layer you keep running throughout much of the programme. You use it when you want light to set the mood.

Specific moments

• Dance floor and club settings: moving beams and coloured light above the dance floor only become truly spectacular with a constant haze. Ideal for parties and corporate events where the evening revolves around music and lighting.
• Opening moment or announcement: a crisp laser or a shaft of backlight the moment the programme begins. At a product launch, haze helps sharpen the first visuals or the reveal.
• Live performances and stages: backlight beams behind a band or speaker add depth and separate the stage from the background. The beams stand out without the audience sitting in the smoke.
• Atmospheric transitions: calm, warm lighting during a dinner or ceremony that gains just a little more depth from a light haze.

At a festival or larger production, haze often runs for almost the entire evening, whereas at a private event you build the mist up more selectively around the highlights.

The technology: setup and control

A haze machine works with a haze fluid that is vaporised into fine particles by a heated element. The machine blows those particles into the room, where the airflow distributes them evenly. The challenge lies not in producing haze, but in controlling the density and the distribution.

Placement

Where you position the machine determines the result. We place the haze machine so that the mist moves with the room’s natural airflow and spreads towards where the lighting is. Often that is at the side of the stage or near the air-conditioning outlet, so the mist spreads evenly rather than building up in one place. Ventilation and draughts have a major influence: a door that keeps opening or a strong extraction system can pull the mist away, so we take that into account when setting up.

Control via DMX

We prefer to control the haze machine via DMX, linked to the same lighting desk as the rest of the lighting rig. That way we set the output from behind the desk and keep the mist consistently topped up. Instead of running the machine continuously at full output, we give short, measured bursts that maintain the base density. That prevents the room from slowly becoming too thick and keeps the picture even all evening.

Setup, testing and operation on site

We set up well before the programme starts and run the machine in briefly to lay down an even base haze. We then test it together with the lighting: we look at how the beams read, whether the density is right and whether the mist spreads evenly. After that our technician operates the haze throughout the event, so the density moves with the programme and there is never too much or too little mist. Everything is done in a controlled way, tailored to the room.

Safety and points to consider

Special effects are always placed and operated safely by us, and haze is no exception. The points to consider are, however, specific to this effect.

Smoke detectors and the fire alarm system

Haze can trigger sensitive optical smoke detectors, even though it is not smoke. This is the most important point to consider at an indoor venue. We discuss the fire alarm system in advance with you and the venue: sometimes it is necessary to temporarily bypass the detectors in the relevant zone or have them monitored by the venue manager. We always arrange this in consultation, never on our own initiative.

Ventilation and density

Because haze lingers, a poorly ventilated room can slowly become too thick. We therefore keep a constant eye on the density and meter the output. Good ventilation actually helps to spread the mist evenly and keep the picture constant. We also match the amount to the audience: with speakers, presentations or guests seated in the same place for a long time, we deliberately keep the haze subtle.

Haze fluid and venue

We use haze fluid suited to the machine and the setting. Haze leaves barely any residue compared with dense smoke effects, but we stay alert on smooth floors: a thin deposit can make a floor slightly more slippery with intensive use. On a dance floor or stage we take that into account. We also make sure there is enough clear space around the machine, so the warm output does not blow against anything.

Combining with light, sound and other effects

Haze is by definition an effect that works together with light. On its own you barely see it; its whole purpose is to let your lighting speak. Moving heads, beams, wash light and certainly lasers all take on a completely different weight because of it.

• With light: this is the core combination. We match the haze density to the lighting design, so beams stay sharp without colours washing out.
• With sound: the timing of lighting cues and beams often follows the music. A tight sound system and the lighting design work together, and haze is the layer that makes that visual.
• With video: here metering is important. Too much mist can soften projection on a video screen slightly, so we deliberately keep the density low around screen images and focused on the lighting zones.

Practical tips for a successful result

• Work with a dark or dimmed background. Haze and beams come into their own best when the room is not too brightly lit overall. In a fully lit room the effect disappears.
• Set up early and test with light. The mist needs to spread evenly before the guests arrive. A short test with the lighting cues immediately shows whether the density is right.
• Meter it, do not run it flat out. Constant small bursts give a more stable picture than running the machine continuously at full power. That keeps it subtle and even.
• Account for the airflow. Doors, extraction and air conditioning all help determine where the mist goes. We choose the placement accordingly.
• Match it to your programme. During moments with speakers or cameras we keep the haze lower; on the dance floor it can be fuller.
