The technology: setup and control
A CO₂ jet runs on liquid carbon dioxide from a gas bottle under high pressure. The CO₂ travels through a hose to the jet, where it expands explosively as the valve opens and cools into the white plume. The craft lies in safely connecting the bottles, aiming the jets accurately and triggering them with exact timing.
Placement and direction
Position determines how the plume behaves. We always aim the jets upward, so the cold mist can rise freely and does not blow toward the crowd. Ceiling height is decisive here: there must be enough clear space above the jet for the plume to develop fully without hitting a low ceiling. We also take sightlines into account, because a row of jets to the left and right of the DJ or the stage gives a symmetrical, powerful image toward the dance floor.
Connecting the bottles
We place the gas bottles in a safe, stable spot out of reach of guests, upright and secured against tipping over. The hoses are routed so no one can trip over them and so the connection to the jets is firmly secured. Because the system is under high pressure, we carefully check every connection before pressure is applied.
Control via DMX
We control the CO₂ jets via DMX, linked to the same desk as the lighting rig. That way a burst lands exactly on the beat, the drop or the countdown moment, together with the lighting looks. The response is almost instant: on the cue the valve opens and the plume shoots up. Because everything runs from the desk, we can fire multiple jets at once or in a sequence and weave the effects seamlessly into the programme.
Setup, testing and safe operation on site
We build up well before the programme, connect the bottles and test each jet with a short trial burst to confirm the plume develops properly and the timing from the desk is right. During the event our technician operates the jets, so every burst is deliberate and controlled and no one is ever standing in front of the opening when the effect fires. Afterwards we release the pressure in a controlled way and safely disconnect the bottles.

High pressure and safe zone
The CO₂ leaves the jet under considerable pressure and is ice-cold at the point of release. That is why we always keep a clear zone around and directly above each jet and aim the plume upward, away from guests. Ventilation and concentration
CO₂ is heavier than air and could in theory build up in low-lying or poorly ventilated spaces. In a normal event setting with short, measured bursts and enough air circulation this is not an issue, but we do tailor its use to the space. In small, enclosed or low-lying rooms we limit the frequency or advise against use, and we always ensure adequate ventilation.
Smoke detectors and condensation
CO₂ itself is not smoke, so optical smoke detectors generally respond to it differently than to haze or smoke. Even so, we always coordinate its use with the venue in advance, because every fire alarm system is calibrated differently and the cold plume can produce a little condensation in rare cases. We arrange this together, never without warning.
Cold, condensation and flooring
Because of the strong cooling, light condensation or frost can form directly beneath a jet. On a dance floor or stage we account for this, so the floor at the point of release does not become unexpectedly slippery. We choose the position of the jets partly based on the floor beneath them and the room the crowd needs to move.
Combining with light, sound and other effects
CO₂ truly comes into its own alongside the rest of the production. The white plume is a canvas that runs on timing.
- With light: this is the strongest combination. A plume lit up by moving coloured light at the moment of a drop reads far more powerfully than a white plume alone. We programme the jets and the lighting together, so colour and movement land on the plume.
- With sound: CO₂ revolves entirely around the music. A tight sound system delivers the drop or the countdown moment, and the jet coincides exactly with it. The hiss of the burst joins the sound picture and reinforces the physical experience.
- With video: a plume timed to an image or a countdown screen marks the moment even more. With video we account for the position of the jets relative to projection, so the mist does not block the image from the audience.

Practical tips for a successful result
- Use CO₂ at the peak, not continuously. Its power lies in scarcity. A few well-timed bursts on the drops make more of an impression than a jet firing every few seconds.
- Work with a dark background. The white plume reads sharpest against a dimmed or dark room with moving light. In a brightly lit space the effect loses its power.
- Check the ceiling height in advance. The plume needs room to develop. We determine placement based on the height and the sightlines of the room.
- Programme together with light and music. Let the jets run within the show, so plume, beat and lighting look land at the same moment.
