What DMX lighting control is

DMX lighting control is the system with which you drive all the lighting in a setup centrally. DMX stands for the standard protocol used throughout the event world to control fixtures. Through a single signal chain you drive every connected lamp, and because each fixture has its own address, it also receives its own instructions. This lets you determine the colour, the brightness, the movement and the transitions of the complete setup from one place, from a single spot to hundreds of fixtures at once.

Without control, lighting stays a collection of separate lamps. It is the DMX control that turns them into a show, by making all fixtures work together in scenes that suit the moments of your evening. A scene can set the stage in a warm colour while the dance floor stays dark, and with one press of a button you switch to an entirely different picture. That control over the whole is what distinguishes an amateur setup from a managed production.

The control itself is done with a lighting console or with control software, depending on the scale and the complexity. A compact console suffices for a simple setup, while a larger show calls for more extensive control with more options for programming and live operation. Which solution fits best depends on the number of fixtures, the type of effects and the way you want the show to run. We make that choice together with the lighting plan.

Why good control makes the difference

The quality of a light show lies not only in the fixtures, but above all in how they are controlled. The same set of lamps can look dull or spectacular, depending on the control behind them. The technology behind the control

Addressing and the signal chain

The basis of every DMX setup is the addressing. Each fixture gets a unique address, so the control system knows which instructions are meant for which lamp. Without correct addressing, fixtures would carry out the same commands or respond at cross purposes, and then the picture is wrong. Setting and checking all those addresses is a precise part of the setup. Alongside this we lay the signal chain that carries the DMX signal to all fixtures, and we make sure that chain runs reliably and free of faults.

Scenes, cues and programming

On the control system we build up scenes: fixed combinations of colour, brightness and movement that belong to a particular moment. We link those scenes to cues, the moments at which the show switches from one picture to another. For a tight programme we programme the cues in advance, so the show runs reliably and every transition comes at the right moment. This way nothing has to be improvised during the event at the important moments.

Live operation

Not everything can be set in advance. For a DJ set or an act that does not stick to a tight schedule, a technician controls the light live, responding directly to what happens. We often combine both: we programme the fixed moments, and around them we operate live. This way you get the reliability of programmed cues and the flexibility of human operation in one show.

Integration with sound and video

DMX lighting control comes into its own most as part of a larger whole. We can link the control to the sound, so effects run along with the rhythm and the accents of the music, and match it to the video, so the light connects with what happens on the screen. When light, sound and image are driven from a single plan, an experience emerges that is far greater than the separate disciplines.

That integration is precisely where the control proves its value. A transition in which the light dims, the music swells and the image changes only comes across well if all three are exactly matched to each other. We adjust colours, timing and transitions until the whole show runs cleanly and every cue comes at the right moment.
