A debate everyone can follow

A debate stands or falls on intelligibility. The speakers take turns in quick succession, the moderator steers the conversation and the audience asks questions. That is why we give each speaker and the moderator their own microphone and mix them live, so no one drops out at the moment things get tense. For the room we work with wireless handheld microphones or a fixed roving point, so every question comes through clearly. The foundation for all of this is good sound and intelligibility, tuned to the space.

Alongside the sound, we make sure the visuals follow the conversation. With a large screen or projection and live vision control, whoever is speaking is shown clearly, even at the back of the room. How we approach it

We start with the room and the running order. Based on the layout, the number of speakers and the expected interaction with the audience, we decide which microphones, which sound system and which visuals are needed. On the day itself we set up well ahead of time, run the cables neatly out of the way and test everything before the room fills up. We walk through the key moments together with the moderator, so switching between speakers and the audience runs smoothly.

During the debate there is always technical support on hand. Our technician runs the sound and the visuals live, watches the levels and steps in immediately if a microphone fails or a question from the room is just a touch too quiet. That way the organisers only have to worry about the content.

Points to watch during a debate

An election debate or public debate comes with a few pitfalls. Speakers sometimes talk over each other, which makes a good live mix important. Questions from the audience are unpredictable, so we always keep enough wireless microphones ready. And because a debate is often recorded or streamed, we watch for a clean sound picture without feedback. In a room with a lot of hard surfaces we tune the system carefully, so speech stays clear.
