The sea breeze is no minor matter here. A sound setup on the beach or at the harbour calls for a different approach than a hall in the town centre: we position speakers so the sound carries without being blown away, shield equipment against moisture and sand, and make sure images stay readable in bright or grey coastal light. We factor these considerations into the design in advance, so the production holds up even in a stiff breeze.

• Special effects: light haze to make the beams visible, low fog for an opening moment or confetti for the highlight of the evening.

Getting there and setting up from Amsterdam

The drive from Amsterdam to IJmuiden is roughly 28 kilometres via the A10 and then the Velsertunnel or the route along the Noordzeekanaal. Outside rush hour we are usually there within three quarters of an hour. The harbour area is spaciously laid out with good access roads, which makes loading and unloading at warehouses and quays straightforward. On the beach and along the boulevard the approach is different: there we discuss in advance the nearest unloading point, how we move material across the sand or the promenade, and the available power.
